Walters has started preparations for the earthworks contract on the A354 Weymouth Relief Road. Dorset County Council awarded Skanska the £87.4M Early Contractor Involvement contract to design and build the A354 Weymouth Relief Road in 2007. Walters has been working in partnership with Skanska for three years, from tendering stage and throughout Phase 1, helping to develop the earthworks design and the construction strategy.
Walters has successfully worked in partnership with Skanska in the past including the A43 Towcester to M40 Dualling contract which was a joint venture between Skanska and Costain with an earthworks value of £16 million. The A354 project comprises a single carriageway road, with crawler lane along part, linking the A354 Manor Roundabout near Radipole to the A354 at the top of the Ridgeway Hill. The route will improve the reliability of journey times on the A354 between Weymouth and Dorchester, and help to support public transport. The project will also establish a 30 ha area for nature conservation in the Lodmoor-Lorton area. All of which will be completed prior to the 2012 Olympics sailing event. The earthworks contract is circa £8 million and will involve the moving of over a million cubic metres of varying types of materials, from chalk to coralion rock. So far to date early enabling works have been undertaken and large areas of the site have been carefully excavated under supervision for sucessful archaeological investigation and mapping.
