Maesgwyn Wind Farm - Construction Starts
22 October 2009

Walters UK has started construction of the 13 turbine (26 MW) wind farm development at Maesgwyn in Neath Port Talbot, South Wales. Following an 18 month construction period, the wind farm is programmed to be generating electricity by the end of March 2011.

The project company Pennant Walters (Maesgwyn) Ltd is a joint venture between Pennant Walters and HSBC Infrastructure. Pennant Walters, as part of the Walters Group, has enjoyed the full support of the Walters team through the various project development phases.

Walters UK is the Principle Contractor for the full construction period. This is unusual because the PC role is often transferred to the wind turbine supplier during the installation and commissioning phase. Dale Hart (PWML), the director responsible for Health and Safety, favoured keeping the PC role with WUK to ensure the full coordination with other site users. The Maesgwyn site is used for various motor sport events including the Walters Arena stage of the Rally of Great Britain. Coordination to ensure construction works, motor sport events and other site activities remain segregated is a top priority to the site management team.

Maesgwyn has been an excellent opportunity for Walters UK to enter the renewables market. This particular project has civil engineering challenges which strongly reflect the particular skill set and expertise of the Walters Group; working within former open cast sites and working with unusual and difficult ground conditions.

Walters UK is developing the project with Intégral Géotechnique as geotechnical consultant and CD Gray as structural engineer.

The full project team comprises Walters UK Ltd as Principal Contractor, Alstom / Ecotecnia as wind turbine supplier, Powersystems UK Ltd as electrical contractor, Western Power Distribution providing grid connection and Pennant Walters (Holdings) Ltd as CDM Coordinator and project management. Wind Prospect Ltd is acting as Technical Advisor to Barclays Bank Plc.

The Walters UK team, headed by Tim Whinney (Technical Director) comprises:
Nick Rolfe – Project Manager
Carl Jones – Site Engineer
Graeme Proctor – Senior QS
Matthew Evans – QS
