M1 HSR Scheme J10 to J13
03 February 2010

Walters UK has been appointed as earthworks contractor for the M1 J10 (Luton) to J13 (Bedford) hard shoulder running (HSR) scheme. When complete, the HSR will allow Highways Agency staff monitoring the motorway to 'open up' the hard shoulder to road users during busy times to help relieve congestion and improve the flow of traffic.

The main contract was awarded to Costain-Carillion Joint Venture (CCJV) in September 2005 as an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) scheme. The cost estimate for the 26km scheme is between £412 million to £504 million.

Walters has been working with CCJV since May 2006 and has been advising on the various solutions considered as part of the widening. Walters will be extending embankments, placing imported special fills and widening cuttings. The works, headed by Colin Chambers (Director), total approximately £12 million and will progress over a three year duration.

All works will be carried out within strictly controlled traffic management and within limited working space. Walters has added six zero swing excavators to the expanding fleet to meet with the demanding programme and restricted working space.
