A468 Dualling Caerphilly

Contract Details

The A468 Natgarw Hill between the A470 and the Penrhos Roundabout in Caerphilly was a dual lane carriageway for its entire length except for 600 meters which was a single lane creating a bottleneck for traffic heading towards the A470. The road operated by Rhondda Cynon Taff (RCT) forms an important access link for Caerphilly County Borough Council (CCBC).

Walters UK employed Capita Symonds to develop the detailed design which included improvements to the Penrhos Roundabout. The works comprised:-

  • Protecting and diverting numerous, highly sensitive WPD, BT and NTL apparatus
  • Extension of two culverts with associated earthworks to widen cuttings and embankments.
  • Improvements to Penrhos roundabout to provide for four lanes of traffic on the A468 Northbound approach.
  • Drainage, street lighting, road signs and landscaping.
  • Provision of a footpath on the B4600 with a signal controlled crossing.

The restricted space meant that it was impossible to safely construct the works without restricting the existing traffic during construction. We worked closely with the Welsh Assembly, RCT and the police to keep disruption to an absolute minimum. We liaised with local residents regularly through letter drops keeping them informed of key events and progress of the works.

Works totalled approximatey £2.5 million and were completed within budget and 4 weeks ahead of programme.
