Parc Derwen Common, Infrastructure Works, Bridgend

Contract Details

This major project promoted by a consortium including Persimmon, Taylor Wimpey and the Welsh Assembly Government, was undertaken to provide the basic infrastructure for what will become a £225m scheme to create a new village at Parc Derwen, near Bridgend.

The plan is to build 1,500 homes on 80 hectares of agricultural land between Bridgend and the neighbouring village of Coity and to create a modern community where villagers will be encouraged to walk and cycle. The new village will also have a small shopping centre as well as a 330-place primary and nursery school.

Principal elements of the scheme included:

  • The construction of a 450 metre long Section 38 Loop Road up to 10.5m wide with 2m wide footpath and 3.5m wide cycleway including service diversions.
  • A footbridge over the A4061 with associated strengthened approach embankments and retaining walls involving traffic management and road closures.
  • The construction of 1.75 km of spine road with footpaths, cycle ways and services installation.
  • The construction of a new Pumping Station installed within a 9 metre deep, 4.5 metre diameter shaft with associated control equipment and rising main.
  • Construction of a 2,800 m3 storm attenuation tank in precast and reinforced concrete.
  • Approximately 4 km of storm and foul drainage up to 1200 mm diameter and up to 6m deep with associated attenuation lagoons and flow control structures.
  • Section 185 sewer diversion approximately 1.1 km long partly under new road construction and partly across open fields.
