Contract Details
The 60 acre site was used from approximately 1947 to the late 1970s to landfill a range of materials including colliery spoil, ash from power stations, quarry wastes, chemical wastes and other wastes including rubber, glass and paper. Anecdotally, the site was referred to as one of the most heavily contaminated sites in the UK. Walters purchased the site in 2002 and immediately set to work on preparing a robust and comprehensive remediation strategy to ensure that the site would be suitable for residential and commercial development. Walters UK undertook the works as a design and build contract including the full site remediation and first phase of infrastructure. - Full site investigation followed by the preparation of a remediation strategy and planning application including an Environmental Impact Assessment.
- Removal of all highly contaminated materials including the barreled chemical waste.
- Site remediation using bioremediation, soil washing and treatment of contaminated groundwater.
- Bulk earthworks and ground improvements including dynamic compaction.
- Installation of a capillary break layer and formation of development plateaus.
- Construction of 2 roundabouts and approximately 1 km of access roads and associated drainage serving four major residential developments (approximately 500 houses) and a commercial area.
- Improvements to existing highway including traffic calming.
- Below ground storm water storage tanks ranging from 150m3 to over 1000m3 with flow control chambers, all constructed for adoption by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.
- Sports field, car parking and leisure/amenity area.
- Reinforced earth embankment and landscaping.
