Contract Details

The 21 hectare site is located within the former steelworks at Ebbw Vale and has a history of over 200 years of industrial usage including ironstone and coal mining, iron and steel production, coke ovens, tinplating and railway sidings and locomotive maintenance.

The regeneration strategy included:

  • Large scale earthworks to create a generally uniform platform and the formation of a 1.5 to 2m thick constraint free zone below the finished surface level suitable for future development.
  • The breaking out and removal of approximately 50,000m3 of reinforced concrete slabs and foundations.
  • Improvement of the bearing and settlement characteristics of the soils.
  • Improvement of the landscape form.
  • The stabilisation and capping of all recorded mine entries and the backfilling of existing basements and other voids.
  • The bioremediation of 12,500m3 of hydrocarbon contamination
  • Drilling and grouting to stabilise buried coal combustion
  • Extensive chemical testing and analysis.
  • The diversion and raising of a number of lengths of existing deep surface water culverts and foul sewers.
