Contract Details

Maesgwyn Wind Farm is north of Glynneath, between the head of the Dulais Valley and the Upper Neath Valley. The site occupies a former coal opencast site which has been restored to mainly coniferous forestry. It is currently used for a number of motor sport events, including the Walters Arena stage of the Wales Rally GB.

Planning permission was granted for the 13 turbine development in 2007. The project company Pennant Walters (Maesgwyn) Ltd is a joint venture between Pennant Walters and HSBC Infrastructure. Pennant Walters, as part of the Walters Group, has enjoyed the full support of the Walters team through the various project development phases.

Construction at Maesgwyn began in October 2009 and following an 18 month construction period, is due for completion during March 2011.

Walters UK is acting as Principal Contractor and constructing civil engineering works under amended ICE Design and Construct Conditions of Contract. As part of WUK’s design team, Intégral Géotechnique is providing geotechnical consultancy and CD Gray providing structural design. Site infrastructure design is provided by WUK’s in-house design team.

The full project team comprises Walters UK Ltd as Principal Contractor, Alstom / Ecotecnia as wind turbine supplier, Powersystems UK Ltd as electrical contractor, Western Power Distribution providing grid connection and Pennant Walters (Holdings) Ltd as CDM Coordinator and project management. Wind Prospect Ltd is Technical Advisor to Barclays Bank Plc.
